Lunar Mansions of Vedic Astrology
The Lunar Mansions of Vedic Astrology, or Nakshatras as they are called, can be a helpful tool for understanding more deeply the planetary energies that are at play within the Universe at any given moment in time. So, just exactly what are these Nakshatras, or Lunar Mansions as we shall call them from here on in? In ancient times, when the lunar calendar was utilised to a greater extent than the solar calendar, the Moon’s movement was charted over the course of the month against the fixed stars of the constellations. Many cultures, including India’s, still favour a lunar calendar.
Although a lunar month is a little over 28 days in length, there are 27 Lunar Mansions in use in Vedic Astrology. However, it should be noted that some astrologers utilise a 28th Lunar Mansion in their work. These Lunar Mansions can best be understood if they are related to as subsections of a zodiac sign, adding an extra colour and focus of energy. In India, when a person is asked for their Birth Star, they will give the Lunar Mansion which the Moon occupied at their time of birth.
The Moon is astrologically related to the conceptual and creative nature of the Mind, reflecting the energy of the Sun, which relates to the Soul. As the Moon is reflective by nature, its energy is highly influenced by the Lunar Mansion which it is transiting at any given moment. This, along with other factors, forms the basis of my Daily Vedic Lunar Scopes.
As a culture which is more familiar with Western Astrology than Vedic, we can gain profound insight not only into our own Nature but also into the potential of the Astrological Forces at play at any given time by understanding the influence of the Lunar Mansions, calculated from the perspective of Vedic Astrology as they impact upon Western Astrology, such as in a Western Birth Chart. This forms a large part of the foundation of my Astrological Work.
